Downtown Orlando's December Runs on Two Calendars. Lake Eola Gets the Weekends, the Frontyard Gets the Weeknights.

This year the trees along Magnolia Avenue will be wrapped in lights. The city's holiday program describes the lit stretch as a connection between Lake Eola Park, Heritage Square and the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts. You can walk it in a few minutes. The two free holiday programs at either end of it barely share a schedule.

Lake Eola's Downtown for the Holidays program mostly runs Friday through Sunday and wraps up its hands-on activities by December 22. The Frontyard Holiday Festival on the arts center's lawn opens on weeknights when Lake Eola's markets and Santa line are closed, and it is the only one of the two with full festival nights between Christmas and New Year's Eve.

Before December 4, the calendar belongs to indoor venues

November is a warm-up, and almost all of it happens indoors or by the clock. The Messiah Choral Society of Central Florida puts on its free performance of Handel's Messiah in Steinmetz Hall on Sunday, November 15. Central Florida Ballet's A Christmas Nutcracker Tale plays the Dr. Phillips Center on November 19 and 20. Clare and the Chocolate Nutcracker follows on November 28.

A few miles north, the Council of 101's Festival of Trees fills the Orlando Museum of Art from November 14 to 22, open daily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $23 for adults and $15 for children 3 to 12.

The week of November 16 is when the outdoor season begins to set up. The city is closing the southbound lane of North Eola Drive between Robinson Street and Washington Street from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. on November 18, 19 and 20 for setup at Lake Eola, and posted no-parking zones may come with it, according to the City of Orlando's road closure notice. The same week brings two evening events west of the lake:

  • Wednesday, November 18: The Luminary Market and KaleidoScope 360° Movie Night at Luminary Green Park, 437 N. Terry Ave., in Creative Village. The market runs 5:30 to 9 p.m. and the movie starts at 7.
  • Thursday, November 19: The Downtown Arts District's 3rd Thursday, 6 to 9 p.m., with the CityArts reception. The district advertises $4 validated parking at the Plaza Garage, except on sporting-event nights.

The Frontyard opens Friday, November 27, a week ahead of Lake Eola, and runs alone until the tree lighting.

Lake Eola keeps a Friday-to-Sunday clock

The City of Orlando's Tree Lighting Celebration is Friday, December 4, from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Music at the Lake Eola Amphitheater starts at 5:30, and the main-stage show at 7 counts down to the lighting. Food trucks, snowfall, Santa photos and the Merry Market are all part of the night. The city suggests getting there by SunRail, rideshare, bike share or the free LYMMO circulator.

The tree is six stories tall and carries 88,000 animated lights. After lighting night, nearly everything at the lake follows the description in the city's road closure notice: events "are scheduled Friday through Sunday at Lake Eola Park throughout the month of December." The weekend activities, per the downtown program page:

  • Merry Market, east side of the park, 5:30 to 9:30 p.m.
  • Santa at the Eola House, 512 E. Washington St., 5:30 to 9 p.m. starting December 5. You join a virtual queue by scanning a QR code on-site, and the queue can close before 9 if it fills.
  • Grinch's Lair, 5:30 to 9 p.m., with the same on-site QR queue.
  • Holiday train on the North East Lawn, 5:30 to 9 p.m., December 4 through 20.
  • Snowfall on Washington Street by the Lake Eola House. It falls for 15 minutes every half hour from 6 to 9 p.m.
  • DTOLive! concerts at the park on December 5, 6, 11, 12, 13, 18, 19 and 20.
  • Movies. The East Lawn shows How the Grinch Stole Christmas on December 5, Elf on December 12 and A Christmas Story on December 19, all at 7 p.m. Seneff Arts Plaza has Sunday screenings on December 6, 13, 20 and 27.

Heritage Square follows the same pattern. A mini market, face painting and character visits run 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. on December 4 to 6, 11 to 13 and 18 to 20. Saturday, December 12, is the biggest night at the lake. The 13th annual Violectric Holiday Show starts at 7 p.m. at the Walt Disney Amphitheater and is free, on the same day the Orange County Regional History Center offers free admission. Sunday, December 13, is Sensory Night, 5:30 to 9:30 p.m., with no or low music, a quiet area, noise-canceling headphones and separate line systems for Santa and the Grinch.

Two shows ignore the weekend schedule. The Eola Wonderland tree show plays at 5:45, 6:45, 7:45, 8:45 and 9:45 p.m. every evening from December 4 through January 6. The new Holiday Projection Show on the History Center facade runs every 15 minutes from 5:30 to 10 p.m. nightly, December 4 through January 2. On most Tuesdays in December, those two shows are all that's running at Lake Eola.

The Frontyard fills the weeknights, with one exception

The Dr. Phillips Center sets its hours in two blocks.

Dates Weekdays Weekends Closed
Nov. 27 to Dec. 13 Wed. to Fri., 5 to 10 p.m. Sat. and Sun., 2 to 10 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays
Dec. 16 to Dec. 31 Mon. to Fri., 5 to 10 p.m. Sat. and Sun., 2 to 10 p.m. Dec. 24 and 25
Dec. 14 and 15 Both days

Wednesday and Thursday nights are when the Frontyard has the field to itself. All three of its weekday theme nights fall on Thursdays: Latin Night on December 3, Country Night on December 10 and Yacht Rock Night on December 17. The lawn covers three acres and features more than 80 live performances, fire pits, light displays and games. Santa's Story Nook has sing-alongs with Santa, Mrs. Claus and elves, and the Tree of Light has its own choreographed lighting moment. The festival itself is free. Some indoor holiday shows at the center sell tickets separately.

The exception is Monday and Tuesday, December 14 and 15. The Frontyard is closed both days, and Lake Eola has nothing on those two nights beyond the tree and projection shows. December 14 also opens the Orlando Magic's December home stand at the Kia Center, with Philadelphia that night and Cleveland on December 16, both at 7 p.m., according to the Magic's 2026-27 schedule release. In the middle of December, the busiest place downtown on a Monday night may be the arena.

December 17, 21 and 22 put both calendars on at once

Lake Eola adds three non-weekend dates for the Merry Market, Santa and the Grinch: Thursday, December 17, Monday, December 21 and Tuesday, December 22. By then the Frontyard is open every weeknight, so these are the only weekdays of the season when Lake Eola's market and meet-and-greets and the Frontyard lawn are open on the same night.

December 17 is the most crowded of the three. It is Yacht Rock Night on the Frontyard and the December 3rd Thursday in the Downtown Arts District, from 6 to 9 p.m. December 21 adds the Magic's 7 p.m. game against Sacramento, which is World Basketball Day at the Kia Center. The Plaza Garage's $4 validation doesn't apply on sporting-event nights, which is worth remembering when Thursday art nights and game nights land in the same month.

After December 22, the Frontyard carries the festival nights

Lake Eola's hands-on activities end with the Tuesday, December 22 dates. The last nine days of the year look like this:

  1. Wednesday, December 23: The Frontyard is open 5 to 10 p.m. The Magic host Charlotte at 7 p.m.
  2. Thursday, December 24, and Friday, December 25: The Frontyard is closed. The Eola Wonderland tree show and the History Center projection show still run.
  3. Saturday, December 26: The Frontyard reopens 2 to 10 p.m. The Magic host Toronto at 7 p.m.
  4. Sunday, December 27: The Greatest Showman singalong at Seneff Arts Plaza at 6:30 p.m., the Orlando Farmers Market at Lake Eola from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and the Magic against Milwaukee at 6 p.m. on Jewish Heritage Night.
  5. Tuesday, December 29: The Pop-Tarts Bowl kicks off at Camping World Stadium at 5:30 p.m.
  6. Thursday, December 31: The Frontyard's family-friendly New Year's Eve Party.

The Frontyard is the only festival lawn running that week, while the tree show keeps going nightly at Lake Eola into January. According to the city's road closure notice, crews take down the Lake Eola setup on January 7 and 8, with the same North Eola Drive lane closed 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. Both organizers say dates, times and programming can change, so check the Frontyard calendar and the Downtown for the Holidays page before you head out.

Living downtown in December means Santa at the Eola House on a Friday and Yacht Rock on the Frontyard on a Thursday are both a short walk away.
