For years, a Lake Nona weeknight ran on a single axis. Dinner meant Boxi Park or Chroma. A quick errand meant driving to Narcoossee. A Friday walk meant the Sculpture Garden and the Beacon at Town Center. The loop was tight, and it was the whole game.
That loop now has a second center of gravity. Between mid-May and late July, Tavistock rolled out the first wave of tenants at Lake Nona West, a 405,000-square-foot open-air center on 54 acres along Lake Nona Boulevard east of Boggy Creek Road. The stores didn't just add options. They redistributed which nights of the week feel like which parts of the neighborhood.
What's actually open right now
Openings have moved in phases, which means the answer to "is it open yet?" depends on which store you mean. As of early August:
- Homesense opened in mid-May in a roughly 25,000-square-foot home decor store, the first tenant to welcome shoppers.
- Barnes & Noble followed in mid-June with its newer café-plus-community-events concept.
- Total Wine & More opened about a week after Barnes & Noble.
- Target, the 149,247-square-foot anchor, opened in late July alongside Dick's Sporting Goods and Golf Galaxy in a combined 66,562-square-foot footprint.
- Nordstrom Rack is finishing an approximately 25,893-square-foot buildout with an August opening on the calendar.
The smaller tenants announced this spring, Drybar, Just Salad, Gloss Nail Co., and Kilwins Ice Cream, total about 8,078 square feet and are rolling in through the fall. Sephora and JETSET Pilates were confirmed last December for the same summer wave. Cañonita, the first Mexican restaurant announced for the center and the first location outside The Venetian in Las Vegas, is a 9,321-square-foot space with a reported $4.5 million buildout, targeting late 2026.
The Tuesday-through-Thursday shift
Here is what actually changed. Before this summer, weeknights in Lake Nona were quiet by design. Boxi Park is open to the public Thursday through Sunday, which meant Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday effectively belonged to takeout and the couch. The Rollin' Food Truck Rally on Tuesdays and the first-and-third-Wednesday Farmers Market carried the mid-week, but neither is a dinner-and-a-walk destination for a family that just finished the day.
Lake Nona West changed the mid-week without meaning to. A Tuesday now looks different when a Target run, a stop at Just Salad, and a browse through Barnes & Noble can happen inside 400 yards of walkable frontage, under shaded canopies engineered for a July afternoon in Central Florida. The center was built around exactly that use case. Tavistock's leasing team has said publicly the goal is a place residents visit multiple times per week rather than once for a haul, which is why the tenant mix leans hard into daily-service categories like beauty, fitness, and casual dining rather than a traditional department-store spine.
The mid-week gravity also solves a smaller problem locals have been vocal about for a decade. When leasing director Joanne Ling told reporters in April that residents had been asking for a Target for almost as long as Lake Nona has existed, she was not exaggerating. Lake Nona turned 30 this year. The Target is the first anchor grocery-and-general option inside the community itself, which shortens a mid-week errand from a Narcoossee round trip to a fifteen-minute walk or a two-stop Beep shuttle ride.
Friday still belongs to Foodie Friday
Nothing at Lake Nona West is trying to replace what Nona Adventure Park does on Fridays. If anything, the west side takes pressure off it.
Every Friday starting at 5:30 PM, Nona Adventure Park runs Foodie Friday with rotating food trucks, Splashes Restaurant open for wings and pizza, a full bar, and live music from Grammy-nominated songwriter John David Williams. Free entry, no reservations, playground on-site.
That is not a routine you rebuild. It is a routine you protect. The new arithmetic is that a family can knock out the Target-and-Homesense trip on a Wednesday, which frees Friday night to be what it was already becoming: a lake-view, kid-friendly wind-down that the rest of Orlando keeps trying and failing to copy.
Saturday and Sunday keep their existing choreography. Art Aftr Dark by Orlando Local Makers runs Friday and Saturday evenings at Town Center. The Sunday Lakeside Market stays the anchor of the weekend morning. Boxi Park's live-music stage still owns Thursday through Sunday nights. What's new is the sense that the week has more than two functional dinner destinations inside the community.
The murals are the seam, not the decoration
It would be easy to write off the public art program as marketing. It is doing more work than that.
Miami studio Chalk & Brush, founded by Cuban-born artist Cinthia "Cynno" Santos, is installing 30 murals across Lake Nona West's buildings and walkways. It is the studio's largest installation to date. A large "Greetings from Lake Nona West" wall is already visible from Lake Nona Boulevard, and the interior courtyard is getting a "Wish You Were Here" piece designed to become the community's next photograph.
The reason this matters for daily life is continuity. Lake Nona already has one of the most photographed public art programs in Central Florida, from the Sculpture Garden next to the Wave Hotel to the Beacon at Town Center. Wiring 30 more murals into the new center closes the visual loop between Lake Nona West and Town Center so a resident walking the two-and-a-half-mile arc feels like they are inside one district, not driving between two shopping centers. Two new roundabouts on Lake Nona Boulevard and continued Beep autonomous shuttle service reinforce the same idea at the traffic level.
A workable August week, in order
For a resident already inside the community, here is what the redistributed week looks like in practice:
- Monday — quiet. Read on the porch. Sunlight Yoga at Dockside if you want it.
- Tuesday — Target run and Homesense browse before dinner. Rollin' Food Truck Rally at Town Center after.
- Wednesday — Farmers Market on the first and third of the month. Otherwise, Barnes & Noble café, then dinner at Canvas Restaurant & Market on the Laureate Park waterfront.
- Thursday — Boxi Park opens for the week. Live music on the stage. Beach volleyball courts free early.
- Friday — Foodie Friday at Nona Adventure Park, 5:30 PM. If not, Art Aftr Dark at Town Center.
- Saturday — daytime at Lake Nona West for the errands you skipped. Evening at Boxi Park or Chroma Modern Bar + Kitchen.
- Sunday — Lakeside Market. Long walk home through the Sculpture Garden.
The point of the list is not that any single item is new. The point is that the mid-week rows used to read "nothing" and now don't.
What's still coming, and roughly when
For anyone tracking the rest of the buildout, here is where the phased openings stand:
| Tenant | Size | Expected |
|---|---|---|
| Nordstrom Rack | ~25,893 sq ft | August 2026 |
| Sephora | ~4,741 sq ft | Rolling through fall |
| JETSET Pilates | ~2,519 sq ft | Rolling through fall |
| Drybar, Just Salad, Gloss Nail Co., Kilwins | ~8,078 sq ft combined | Rolling through fall |
| Cañonita | 9,321 sq ft | Late 2026 |
| Additional tenants | TBD | Into early 2027 |
Tavistock has said the phased openings will continue through the fall and into early 2027, dependent on individual buildout timelines. The 20-stall Mercedes-Benz Level 3 EV charging hub is already energized, which is a small detail but a functional one for the growing share of Lake Nona households running electric.
The other date worth putting on the calendar is Lake Nona Community Day at Nona Adventure Park on Saturday, September 27. Residents who show proof of Lake Nona residency at check-in receive a free Aqua Park session pass, with vendors, food trucks, and a prize draw on-site. It is the kind of thing that reads like marketing until you go, and then you realize half your neighbors are already there.
The point
A shopping center is not usually a story. This one is because it repaired a weekday problem the community had been living with quietly for years. Lake Nona West did not add a destination. It added a second one, close enough to the first that the whole community reads as a single walkable district rather than a Town Center with satellites. The murals, the roundabouts, and the Beep shuttle are the connective tissue. The tenant mix is the reason to use it.
If you already live in Lake Nona, the question this fall is not whether to visit. It is which night of the week you'll quietly move from one side of the community to the other, and what that frees up on the calendar.
If your household is thinking through what a change of address inside or into this part of Central Florida might look like now that the map has shifted, the Suzanne and Chad Team tracks these openings, routes, and community rhythms as closely as the market data. Start Your Home Search when you're ready, and bring your questions about the neighborhood, not just the listing.
